This modern design City Hill House situated on an elevated site, the house has commanding views of the city to the northwest and Melbourne’s eastern suburbs to the northeast. The axes of these two views meet at a distinctive cambered crimp in the copper-clad façade, which is also given expression inside with a two-storey high wall that is a defining feature of the interiors.
This house makes explorations into what could be described as the stage management of views within the house and beyond. Idiosyncratic inflexions of the floor plan crimp the spaces at particular points to taper views to a slice, which are revealed as panoramas as the spaces expand.

Impressions of grandeur soon disperse into an open plan where every space is vibrant and full of life, explore and interrogate the interplay between the internal and external landscape. A palette of copper-clad façade, glass and zinc offset with the warmth of timber and woven cane screens create an environment of contrasting ‘elegance’ and ‘rawness’. Designed by John Wardle architects.
