12 acres of grassy spaces and oak trees on the banks of the Hudson River provide the setting for this house. The long approach toward the home features all angles of its distinctive form, which is marked by a central aperture revealing a view of the river. Further relating the house to its natural surroundings is its layered form-inspired by the striated rocks that populate the site. A balance was struck between incorporating the sublime surrounding landscape into the home and creating an intimate scale. The ground floor affects a more loft-like character, with floor-to-ceiling views, while the second floor, with smaller windows and wood-plank floor, provides a warmer domestic space.
