California Maybeck House Renovation Project by BCV Architects

Unique Maybeck House Architecture Design in California
BCV Architects have been entrusted to renovate and make it become into a modern house of Emma Kellogg House, designed by Bernard Maybeck in the year 1899. The house takes its name, the “Sunbonnet,” from the distinctive gambrel roof that cantilevers over the front porch. The goal of this renovation project was to restore the original character of the house while updating the home programmatically and structurally. The design philosophy mandated that important spaces such as the “sunbonnet”, open stairwell, wood paneled living room and the adjacent dining room be restored to their original condition. New modifications, including a new lower level and adjacent below grade patio and light well, stayed sensitive to Maybeck’s work from that period.
